Jekyll Island Beach House
Ocean Retreat -- You will love sitting on the deck in the morning with your coffee, watching the the ships go by in the distance. Take a walk, ride a bicycle or drive a rented “red bug” to the village or all the way around the island. Whip up a batch of margaritas for happy hour and later, when the live oaks shimmer in the moonlight. Make Ocean Retreat your romantic hide-away, where everybody can find something to do and nobody has to feel crowded. The space "Ocean Retreat" is a beautifully decorated cottage with a nautical theme. It has four bedrooms, three and a half baths, a large living room (the Great Room) with cathedral ceiling, fireplace, and wide-screen TV, a fully-equipped kitchen and dining room, a sun room and decks with panoramic ocean views, and a double garage. It's the second house from the beach (about 80 yards away). BEDS: one king, two queen, one bunk bed and a trundle bed (king or two singles). Accommodates as many as ten. Note, however, that four of the ten berths share the "crews quarters" with the washer and dryer, and may be a bit crowded if all four beds are occupied. Good place to park the children! Amenities include a microwave, toaster oven, blender and dishwasher, washer and dryer, four "smart" cable TVs, including the large-screen TV in the Great Room, two VCRs, one DVD, WiFi, unlimited domestic long distance calling, and heated pool privileges (at the Days Inn). Guests especially appreciate the varieties of glasses, the many pots, pans, slow cookers and other utensils to cook whatever you like. This home is one of the few rentals on the island that accommodates ten people at the dining room table. The ground floor is wheel-chair accessible (see ramp in photo). Two of the four bathrooms have grab bars. Toilet seat risers are available for all four bathrooms. Available year-round for weekly rentals (with discounts for two weeks or more). Daily rentals (minimum of three days) may be available in low season months, and possibly during high season (on late bookings). Weekly rental rates range from $2000 (low season) to $2600 (high season), taxes included. Rentals of more than a month are steeply discounted (as negotiated with the host). During high season (March, April, May, June, July, and some of August) rentals are on a weekly basis only, from Saturday night through Friday night, except when vacancies exist on short notice. "Ocean Retreat" is a "housekeeping cottage." Linens (sheets, pillow cases, pillows, blankets, and towels) are provided, however you will need to supply most of your own detergents, soaps, toiletries, paper products (toilet tissue, paper towels, etc.), and similar. NO PETS, NO SMOKING. "Ocean Retreat" is ideal for family gatherings, girl getaways, corporate retreats, romance, rest, and good times. Jekyll Island is a state park with a National Historic District (the Jekyll Island Club and cottages of the rich and famous), fantastic beaches, first-rate golf courses (three and a half of them), tennis, bike paths, a water park (in season), a nature center with guided kayaking tours, guided and do-it-yourself nature walks, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, dolphin cruises, fishing (there's a fishing pier and many charter boats), horse-back riding (on Driftwood Beach), and bird-watching. It is remarkable because of the absence of fast food chains and strip malls and the presence of reasonably- priced, excellent restaurants. With two-thirds of the island is in its natural state (by State mandate), Jekyll Island is truly a retreat. Our personal favorite day trips from Jekyll Island include Okephenokee Swamp (about one and a half hours away), Cumberland Island National Seashore (accessible by boat only from St. Marys -- about an hour away -- reservations suggested), Savannah (one and a half hours), Brunswick, Saint Simons Island (esp. Fort Frederica), and St. Augustine (about two hours). Orlando is about four hours away. Please Note: The beach opposite "Ocean Retreat" is available only at lower tide -- that is about half the time, more or less, depending upon the phase of the moon. The tide changes at Jekyll Island every five hours and fifty-five minutes. The beach is about 400 feet from the house with dune and breakfront crossovers at the end of Tallu Fish Lane. Guest access Guests have access to every part of the house except the attic and two hall closets. Other things to note Visitors to Jekyll Island (a state park) will need to buy a parking pass. The daily pass ($8) is good for multiple entries over a 24 hour period. This should be the only pass you will need if you do not plan to leave the island much on other days of your visit. The alternative is a $55 annual pass which is (as the name suggests) good for a whole 365 days. We suggest you use your day pass within 24 hours to stock up on groceries and other needs in Brunswick, where the selection and prices are better, or in Saint Simons (we like Harris Teeter). If you like fish and shrimp, it is worth an extra pass to go to City Market in Brunswick.
