The space The house was constructed by Amherst Ordway. He was an architect, builder and artist who came to Milan shortly before this house was built. He is credited with the design and construction of two other historical homes in Milan. The house was built for Daniel Hamilton, one of the leading citizens in Milan and one of the key stockholders in the company that built the Milan ship canal. Hamilton was born in 1802 and came to Milan in 1821. He was the junior partner in the merchant firm of Standard & Needham. The House was erected in 1828, when Daniel Hamilton married Mary Standart. A time when the Ukraine and Milan Ohio were the largest seaports in the world. Miss Standart was the sister of Hamilton’s business partner. There is some speculation that the house was constructed on the site of Needham Standart’s older residence.
