Backcountry camping on an ecological art project
Unique 54 acre ecological art project located 15 minutes from Bowling Green and next to a large Mennonite community. As of 2024, this project is in year 16 of succession and is a place we attempt to share with people who are into nature and who value diversity generally in all systems of the world. This is a project with a theme of unity in human and nature. Camp and be with thoughts among a serene, as well as extremely vibrant and varied ecosystem. The space The main camping space is a stream-side site along a manicured trail about 1/8 mile from parking. The forested camp has a firepit and black locust log seats, with trails branching from the site in 3 directions. There is a slot for a camper, near the road entrance located under a shaded canopy of sassafras, cedar, maple, and staghorn sumac trees, a few paces from an outdoor shower equipped with an outlet to fill water, wash dishes, or wash a vehicle. This location is the same distance from Nashville as when traveling from Bowling Green (along peaceful backroads), and along the direct shortest route toward Knoxville (again along smaller roads). A key ecological feature of this land is a vernal wetland, which are rare in Kentucky and in general due to development. These ephemeral pools are filled with water only for part of the year, a feature that endows them unique ecological benefits to the surrounding areas. As appreciated more every year during the various phases of succession from the starting point of this project, the vernal wetland is a focal point of life, diversity, and vigor that enhances the upland forests, stream, ponds, rolling hills and prairies. If we imagine a bucket of water going round in circles, the vernal wetland is the hand that draws molecules towards itself. Guest access Outdoor shower and trail system. Other things to note This project is part of an exploration for camp hosting as a form of nature conservation. Each booking sets into motion a process of mowing, invasive removal, and pruning along the path. If the project is analogous to a bicycle, guest bookings provide pedal strokes that propel it into the future.
