The house has full baseboard heating in the wintertime. Every room can be adjusted to the warmth desired. Usually air conditioning isn't needed, but air conditioning units are available for the hottest days. The many windows in the cottage open to the Berkshire breezes. They offer a beautiful view of the grassy grounds and surrounding hills, as well as of the farm buildings just above the cottage. Once a dairy farm, the property now features four large barns that overlook the cottage and certified organic fields. On those fields, a local farmer grows certified organic grasses for his own cows, as well for sale to other farmers raising organic animals. A small herd of sheep might be grazing in fields near the cottage, as do a small group of cows that rotate grazing on and off the property. About 50% of the farm's electric power is clean- generated by the solar array in the pasture above the barns. The farm is on a quiet country road just right for walking, where the valley views change with the light of the day. Right at your porch are six raised flower beds, offering a kitchen garden, a tea garden and a cutting garden, with organic flowers, herbs and vegetables. Use them during your stay! Settle into the Adirondack chairs at the porch edge, looking down into the valley and around at the lovely hills and trees. Put some of the famous local corn on the grill and enjoy it at the dining table outdoors. Guest access Use of the cottage would be exclusively yours, with dedicated parking space at its side. A circular drive runs up and behind the cottage, continuing past the grounds around it and back down to the country road below. Four barns sit on the hillside above the cottage and to its side. Any farm equipment is kept inside the barns, as is hay that is stored at certain times of year. The farm is beautifully kept, clean and fresh. We ask that guests respect farm buildings, animals and operations by not touching them, although looking from a safe distance is OK. Children are welcome at the cottage but must always be supervised around the barns and animals. Note for young kids that the cottage porch sits about a foot off the ground but has no railings. In addition to the parking space for the cottage, there is a well-kept parking area in the barnyard near the cottage that can be used by your guests. This area is also used on occasion by farm vehicles. You may sometimes see the farmers up at the barns, briefly parking cars and equipment. The property caretaker will be around too on occasion. The work of the farm goes on in the fields well below the road to the south and in the fields to the north and east. Although it's not excessive, you will be able to see and sometimes hear the seasonal activities of farm life. Farmers stop by almost daily to check animals, etc., with heavier activity usually centering around seasonal collecting, wrapping and storing of hay bales, and their pickup for delivery to other farms. This is a wonderful opportunity to stay in a different world while still having a peaceful experience. Down the hill from the cottage is the distinguished Center Hall Colonial house of the property owners. Built in the early 1800's and recently expertly renovated, the main house is far enough away so that it's possible to operate very privately at the cottage. The are grassy expanses to the front and side of the cottage. Sheep and sometimes cows graze on the nearby fields. It's the best of farm life for you to experience. Other things to note Enjoy a dip in the lake after your day exploring the area! Your stay comes with a pass to local spring-fed Queechy Lake, which is known as one of the cleanest lakes in the state. There's a sandy beach, a lifeguard, picnic tables, a swimming lane and a floating dock. You'll find towels and beach chairs waiting for you at the Farm Cottage too.
