Pullman School House Apartment - monthly rental
An unusual MONTHLY rental in the heart of Pullman National Monument (monthly discount applied when you book) The space Pullman School House An award winning monthly rental in a restored 1880’s Pullman workers two-flat. This second floor unit is located across the street from the Pullman Elementary School in the heart of the Pullman Historic / National Monument district. The space is furnished with objects for guest contemplation. From the Heywood-Wakefield designed student desks that flank the Floyd (Detroit design) queen sized bed, to the iconic EKCO 885 can opener in the kitchen, most every object offers an opportunity for exploration and lends a meaningful contribution to the functionality and ethos of the space. The original transoms above the doors in each room have been restored to working original condition, offering what architect Solan S. Beman (who designed the town of Pullman and this row house) described as “light and air in every room”. It is remarkable how well this system works, but for the warmest days we offer two air-conditioners for modern comfort. Other updates to the space include a bathtub/shower (which at the time built, there was none for this working class home). Also, there is a washer and dryer available for your use, as well as WiFi. If you are here during the growing season, you can enjoy the organic raised garden bed in the backyard. If you are here during planting season, you can make the garden bed your own! Other times you can just enjoy the harvest. There is one organic raised garden bed dedicated to the apartment. A little about us and a little about Pullman... I am an artist, living and working in Pullman with my partner Amy. We have restored several buildings here, including the building next door (which houses my art studio) and another building two doors down (Mosnart - visiting artist project which has it's own short-term 2 night minimum airbnb). I’m happy to show you around, if desired. Pullman represents many things to many people. There are the wonderful train geeks, the gilded age robber baron admirers, the urban planners / explorers, and the folks, like me, who find it all fascinating but are particularly enamored with the workers who lived and struggled here (and the Pullman Porters who did not live here but struggled with the Pullman company in thier own way) all of which make Pullman one of the most important places in labor and civil rights history. For those guests who are interested, we offer access to a fairly large Labor History Library (specific to Pullman), Self-guided Labor Tours (courtesy of the Illinois Labor History Society), DVD documentaries, and more. Pullman today boasts a brand new and complete Pullman National Monument, National Park Service Visitor Center, staffed with bright articulate National Park Rangers (in those great flat hats) offering friendly insights to the many stories here. A few blocks up is the remarkable National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum which gives a look into the Pullman Porter story. The Pullman Exhibit Hall (owned by the Historic Pullman Foundation) has a mix of relics on display concerning Pullman and the town. Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives has fostered retail chains within walking distance for shopping and fast-food. The Metra Electric Line train, with Pullman stops at 115th, 111th, 107th, 103rd, make traveling super easy to Hyde Park, Museum Campus, McCormick Place, and Downtown Chicago. If you take it in the other direction, it brings you to the world class Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University (don’t miss this place!). If you are driving we are just off interstate 90/94 which connects to everything. If you are looking for local eats (in the neighborhood) nothing beats Cal-Harbor Restaurant & Lounge (with a full bar in the back) on 115th, offering an un-ironic 1950’s charm and fluffy pancakes. Lexington Betty Smoke House #1 on 111th offers world class sit-down or to go Bbq. AND we have two pizza parlors that will deliver right to your door! There is also a seasonal open air farmers market (July 6 – October 26) Please tell us a little about yourself and your visit and ask any questions. Guest access The entire 2nd floor apartment. Two points of entry (back and front). Dedicated organic garden bed in back. Plenty of free street parking. Other things to note Express Metra electric train takes you downtown in less than 30 minutes.
