Mendocino Coast Cliffside Cottage—Shangri-La
Shangri-La is the perfect place to relax & renew. Our cottage nests cozily on a high bluff with breathtaking panoramas of the ocean, at the junction of Anderson Valley wineries & the majestic coast. Sit on the deck or take a soak in a hot tub under the stars. A short 8 minute drive takes you to historic Mendocino village. A Zagat-rated restaurant is steps away! The space A Cliffside Cottage with Majestic Ocean Views Shangri-La is the larger of our two cliffside cottages (the other is Sea Cloud; both are dog-friendly). It’s the perfect setting to celebrate a birthday, a proposal, a romantic honeymoon, or an anniversary (maybe in that order!). The cottage is an open-space studio, including a full bathroom and a small but fully equipped cooking area with a dining table. The king-sized bed is in its own nook and opens onto the living room. On the walls of Shangri-La are photographs from films shot in the area, such as East of Eden; movie productions have often been attracted to the area by its beauty and its New England flavor. Parking is provided across the street from the cottage. Some info we want to highlight -- Children under 12 years old are not allowed. The 11% county taxes for transient occupancy are included in your nightly rate. We offer Wifi; it generally works well, but we use a small local provider who can't always quickly restore service if there is a problem. It's not necessarily an ideal situation for remote work. Verizon cell service normally covers the property, however, if you're willing to use your data as a backup. About the area -- Guests can either eat in or take a short walk to the Zagat-rated Ledford House restaurant (a local favorite since 1986). A few more footsteps will take you to the Albion village market, post office, and supply store. Moreover, our Shangri-La cottage is only a 10 minutes drive from the historic and lovely Mendocino village; 20 minutes from historic downtown Fort Bragg. In unique Mendocino, you’ll find world-class restaurants, art galleries, fine shopping, a pub, bookstores, toy stores, a museum, and more; you can take a walk on its bluffs above the meditative ocean. In Ft. Bragg, you can explore the restored historic downtown, and stroll along the newly created cliffside promenades. There’s even a movie theater. Noyo Harbor has several restaurants featuring local catches. Farther north are more beaches and the quaint seaside village of Westport. To the south of Albion village is Navarro Beach and the picturesque hamlet of Elk. To the north are Little River and Big River beaches. Hiking trails abound in Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks; take a walk along Big River; canoe on that river or Albion River; take a whale-watching trip, or ride the Skunk train. The area also provides swimming, ocean kayaking, tennis, and paddle-surfing. Heritage House restaurant and the Albion River Inn, both highly rated, are just across historic Albion bridge—both with spectacular views. The former also has nice walks on its tended grounds, with even a staircase to a hidden mini-beach. Last but not least the wonderful wineries of Anderson Valley are a short drive away on Highway 128, a lovely scenic road through redwood forests and the quaint towns of Philo and Boonville. There are several festivals in the area every year (usually); the two most popular are: The Mendocino Film Festival (June) and The Mendocino Music Festival (July). The weather on the coast is very unpredictable, but it is usually temperate. We often get both clear, sunny skies and misty fog within the same day. Each "season" has its attractions. Whatever the reason for your visit, you can expect to fall under the Northern California Pacific Coast spell (just like it happened to us!). Everyone is welcome to either of our cottages: Sea Cloud or Shangri-La. (And please don't forget: Our rates include all taxes -- all year round!) Although we consider Shangri-La and Sea Cloud sister cottages, they are both private from one another; only the parking area is shared. If you would like to book both cottages please contact us directly for group rates. Guest access Guests have access to the entire cottage, but please note there is no direct access to any beaches from the cottage—the bluff is steep with no improved or accessible trails down. However, there are several beaches within a few minutes drive. Also Spring Grove Rd is a wonderful place to take a stroll above the ocean, with wonderful views. Other things to note There are few things guests will want to know: PLEASE NOTE THAT your rate includes the 11% occupancy tax. SMOKE POLICY: The entire property is non-smoking (this includes vaping & cannabis), including decks, porches, and grounds. A minimum $300.00 fee will be charged for smoking in a guest room. NO CHILDREN POLICY: No children under 12 years old are allowed on the property. PET POLICY: Only dogs are permitted. Guests may bring up to 2 dogs with them. Pets are NOT to be left alone inside the cottage, outside, in the garden, etc. and must be leashed when outside. You must be with your pet(s) at all times. The pet fee is $25 per stay. HOT TUB POLICY: There is a $150 fee for adding any product to the hot tub, such as cleaning products, essential oils, etc.
