Seclusion in the Pines - A Hidden Gem in Bayfield
Rittenhouse Pines Cottage is a one-of-kind rental! It's a secluded getaway overlooking a ravine surrounded by towering pines. And it's close enough (seven blocks) to all downtown Bayfield has to offer! Since it's the guest cottage adjacent to our home (although it's about 1/2 block away), our three friendly dogs are used to having the run of the place. We'll keep them close to home during your stay but if you aren't a fan of dogs, this may not be the cottage for you. The space The cottage is located at the back of our property and is tucked away from the main house. You'll drive about a block and a half down the private driveway to the cottage and the two parking spots. Both bedrooms have queen-sized mattresses with high-end bedding and down pillows and comforters. One of the bedrooms has a smart TV. The kitchen is fully equipped for any sort of meal you can imagine (we even have a fondue pot!). Given that Bayfield is small town with limited and short-staffed dining options, often with long wait-times for a table, cooking at our cottage is a great option! We have a gas grill, a fire pit with a grill attachment, an Instant Pot, and an electric stove/oven. We have a thriving local food scene with plenty of farmers and producers on the South Shore. I'm happy to share a list of the farmers markets, farm stands, and fish shops with you! Plus, we have a great wine shop, Bayfield Wine and Spirits, downtown with a well-curated selection of wine, beer, and liquor. There is high-speed internet at the cottage and both smart TVs are hooked up to the internet with access to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max (you'll have to sign in with your account to access those channels). There are two rustic stairways to the cottage and they may be troublesome for guests who are experiencing ambulatory issues. Guest access The entire cottage and the surrounding yard is all yours during your visit. It's very private and set away from the main house. You access the cottage by keeping right on the driveway. There is room for two cars. We don't allow trailers/ATVs/UTVs on site. Since we live onsite, we may be around to greet you and the door to the cottage will be unlocked. The keys to the cottage will be in the cottage when you arrive. Other things to note The main house was built in the 1880's by a local photographer, Henry Van Cleave. You can see some of his photos at the Bayfield Heritage Association. His son, Nathan, was born in our home on May 8, 1910. He went on to start the Van Cleave Orchestra in New York City in the 1930's and was best known as a composer for Gunsmoke and The Twilight Zone! Our home was once a 100-acre deer farm, the longest operating deer farm in Wisconsin (from the 1920's to 2000)! The cottage was the caretaker's residence when the deer farm was in its heyday. We are fortunate to have some of the only surviving old-growth pines on our property and the cottage overlooks a massive pine that's 14 feet in circumference! Firewood is provided for the fire pit. We live on-site and will be available to assist you with any concerns or questions you may have.
