Spectacular "Bounty House" is EXTREMELY private, situated on its own secluded peninsula on the midcoast Maine island of Islesboro. With 1.2 miles of private oceanfront, each guest can have their own protected beach. There are several hiking trails, an orchard with friendly sheep, and your own private dock. Explore the intriguing four story observation tower atop the center of this 75 acre nature preserve which provides stunning views of the east and west bays and amazing sunrises and sunsets. The space You and your guests can enjoy both the main cottage and the bunkhouse which overlook the ocean, as well as the unparalleled Top of the Bay Tower located on the highest bluff of the property. The approach to the House is down a half mile long private drive. THE HOUSE The main house is a 4 bedroom, 4 full bath, classic Maine shingled cottage decorated in Maine summer home style. This truly unique home was custom built and furnished with the greatest attention to detail. Included are: - Wolf 36” gas range - Washer/Dryer - Fully stocked kitchen with butler’s pantry - Smart TV - High speed Internet access - Wood burning fireplace (and plenty of wood!) - Well stocked library with a variety of games - Outdoor grill THE BUNKHOUSE Accompanying is a 4-bed bunkhouse with its own kitchen and bathroom. It is the perfect place for guests or to put kids up away from adults staying in the main house. THE PROPERTY & BEACHES With 1.2 miles of shore front and 75 acres of woods, there is plenty of space for exploring our trails and many small secluded beaches. Imagine, each guest can have their own private beach to themselves for the day! The property has abundant wildlife, including numerous deer and a nesting pair of bald eagles. Along the shorefront you often see seals lounging on the ledges and hear loons in the cove. Guest access THE ORCHARD, MEDITATION CIRCLE GARDEN & SHEEP At the center of the Preserve is an enclosed 6 acre orchard with more than 100 heritage apple trees, as well as peach, plum, pear and cherry trees. Enjoy the meditation circle rock garden and sit by the Japanese pond teaming with frogs. There are four resident Katahdin Sheep who keep the grass trimmed in their enclosed pasture within the preserve. They continually entertain guests and will come and greet you as they are the friendliest sheep that you will ever encounter (we think that they think that they are dogs). THE TOP OF THE BAY TOWER The Top of the Bay Tower is the newest addition to the property (2021) and is set on the highest point of the Preserve, offering breathtaking views out across the islands of Penobscot Bay. To the East you can see spectacular sun and moon rises. To the West you can enjoy incredible sunsets over West Penobscot Bay and the Camden Hills! We keep a mini-fridge stocked with a variety of wines, beverages and cheeses, as well as various crackers and snacks and a small grill at the top of the Tower. THE DEEPWATER DOCK (SOUTH) AND LONG BEACH (NORTH) On the south side of the property, in one of the most protected coves on the entire island, is a private dock with two, one-ton moorings that are available for guests. On the north side of the property you will find a clearing with picnic tables and a large pebble beach (Long Beach). There are numerous kayaks and a grill at the site. Other things to note AROUND THE ISLAND The island is a year-round community of approximately 500 residents, with an influx of part-time summer residents. There are two fully stocked grocery stores, one of which also sells gas. The islanders pride themselves in self-sufficiency and friendliness (everyone waves to one another as they drive, walk or boat past, regardless of whether friend or stranger). In season there is also a weekly Farmer’s Market at the Community Center. OPTIONAL OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES If you do decide venture off the property, there are many other activities, including numerous other public hiking and nature trails on other smaller preserves on the island. There are also outfits locally that offer sailing cruises, lobster boat tours and fishing. And there are numerous easy day trips to the mainland which can be made to explore the small, picturesque coastal towns of Camden, Rockland and Belfast (all within 15 miles of the ferry terminal) where there is a wide range of high-end restaurants and shopping outlets. The Islesboro Community Center has a state of the art fitness center and a gift shop. MEALS Guests are responsible for their own meals and while there are no restaurants on the island, there are several luncheon options. The Dark Harbor Shop is open daily and offers a variety of sandwiches, salads and ice cream treats (as well as a gift shop). Loony’s Luscious Kitchen provides gourmet lunches Thursday through Sunday. Lobsters can be purchased from local lobstermen. The House kitchen comes pre-stocked with a variety of foodstuffs, and can be further personalized to guests’ palates in advance as requested. Private chef referrals may also be provided upon request. GETTING THERE – BY CAR, BY PLANE (OR BOAT!) The island is accessible by a 20 minute ferry ride leaving from Lincolnville Beach hourly, 7 days a week. A 4 mile drive from the ferry terminal leads you to the property entrance – and at the end of the half mile long driveway is the main house. There is a small well maintained airport on the island with a 2,400 foot paved runway which can accommodate private planes and is also serviced by small commercial carriers.. And with two deep water moorings and a private dock, arriving at the Bounty House by boat is always another option. Moor your sail/ motor boat in our private cove, or charter one of the dedicated boats in the area who can bring you to the private dock from the mainland on demand. RESTRICTIONS THIS IS A SMOKE FREE HOUSE. Please respect this home as you would your own and leave it in the same condition as you found it. And under no circumstances can there be more than 10 registered overnight guests on the property as the septic system cannot handle a larger load. No unregistered overnight guests are allowed on the property or the reservation will be cancelled and you will be asked to vacate the property. Final Note: This property is perfect for people who desire exceptional privacy and enjoy being in nature as we have a lot of it. This property is NOT for guests who need the hustle and bustle of commercial shopping, tourist activities and wanting to be “in the middle of the action”. If you need to be in the middle of everything, please go book something in Bar Harbor or Boothbay Harbor instead. Island living is a slower and gentler way of life and we on the island all like it that way.
