Welcome to The School House: One of the most unique homes in the Shenandoah Valley! Built in 1910 this home has served as a community gathering place, school, church, dance hall, hay barn, now restored into a beautiful home with an experience that will not disappoint. Spectacular panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains serve as the backdrop to the incredible indoor and outdoor spaces. Feel secluded yet minutes away from JMU, Massanutten, wineries, breweries, and Downtown Harrisonburg. The space The School House sits on about 1.9 partially wooded acres adjacent to Cross Keys Farm which is the historic site of the Battle of Cross Keys. Locals have always called it "The School House" due to its large rectangular red structural presence as you catch a glimpse of it in the distance traveling Cross Keys or Pleasant Valley Road. The History: - The property was built in early 1900's - The Cross Keys Battlefield (Civil War) comes onto our property just to the other side of the driveway and extends through the Cross Keys Farm (orchard), across RT 276 and the distant hills. - We have learned over the years the structure has been used for school, a community hall, worship services, art studio, USO dances, and a hay barn, until it was semi-converted into a residence in the 80's by a local artist who discovered the structure in the woods which was vacated at the time. He purchased it from a Doctor in the New Market area. - We purchased it in 2009 (our oldest 2 children were born while living in the house. - After clearing the fence line of the 5+/- acres which is the mountain range view you see out front which was overgrown and virtually unnoticeable, we subdivided the property and sold the house in order to afford to build up the hill during the 2008 recession. - In 2020 we jumped at the chance to purchase it back just as COVID came into the news and we spent the first 6 months renovating the house as a family project before going live on AirBnB that July. The Property: The School House sits on about 1.9 acres as you arrive you will turn into the driveway and stay to the left (our home is to the right). As you approach the house on the tree-lined driveway you will realize there is plenty of parking in the U-shaped driveway including a leveled-off parking area to the left of the home which was planned for a pick-up game of basketball and to park and charge your electric vehicle on our Juice Box Level 2 EV charger. Use the pathways as a guide leading you to the covered front porch, the front yard, the firepit with adirondack chairs, the patio with dining table & chairs, gazebo, and 6-person hot tub. With stunning views of Massanutten and the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is hard to find a better outdoor space in the Valley. If you are an early riser you must check out the sunrise over Massanutten while you are here, if you are lucky during the Spring after a late afternoon shower you may catch a full double rainbow! There is also a charcoal grill. We own a total of 5 acres, feel free to walk around the property one full loop is about 1/2 of a mile. if you explore up the alleyway by the red storage shed you will approach our chicken coop/run with laying hens at any given time of the year. If you ask, we usually have fresh eggs in the fridge and will gladly share, if your kids would like to collect eggs for breakfast one morning give us a heads up we will try to make that experience a reality. Beyond the coop is a wide-open field you will often find our kids playing. At the end of the field you will see a herd of cattle and in the distance hear goats (yes, they sound like a bunch of kids playing). The front field is about 150 acres which is where The Battle of Cross Keys took place during the Civil War. Now it is a working farm where you can pick your own apples, peaches, pears, plums berries and flowers. Check their farmstand out for fresh locally grown produce!
