The Crik House: Modern digs, American farm country
Situated in the small rural hamlet of White Creek, NY, the Crik House is a fully wired, but bucolic retreat. It is the perfect base for exploring the cultural treasures and outdoor recreation opportunities of western MA (W.TheaterFest, the Clark, Mass MoCA), Southern VT (Bennington Museum, Hildene, Stratton), and upstate NY (Battenkill tubing, Saratoga racetrack). Or, relax in place and enjoy the simple charm of this farming community. The space The Crik House is perfect for Bennington College parents' weekend, visiting nurses from the hospital, a remote worker looking for some outdoor time, a writer on retreat, families looking for fresh air, or anyone who is interested in experiencing pastoral upstate New York/Southern Vermont in all its raw and uncurated glory. This single-floor newly renovated cottage is located in the historic farming district of White Creek, NY (or "the Crik" as we locals call it), in the heart of Grandma Moses country. The Crik House was built within the frame of a barn structure with a Scandanavian modern style in mind. Its 1100 sq ft interior is light and airy, with clean lines, full wall windows, 10' ceilings, and an open floor plan which lends a feeling of spaciousness to this compact building. This guest house has a low threshold entry and a walk-in shower which will be comfortable for guests who may have mobility impairment (note though, the bathroom entry is 30"). The bedrooms are equipped with personal workspaces and high speed hardwired gigabit internet (wi-fi in the rest of the house). Other amenities include a fully appointed kitchen, a washer/dryer, large smart TV that will connect with all your streaming services (byo gaming equipment), two queen sized beds (linens, towels, and shampoo/conditioner are provided). LOCATION: White Creek is located 8 minutes from Bennington College, 15 minutes from SWVT Medical Center, and is adjacent to world-class cultural hotspots spanning 3 states, ski slopes, public lakes and rivers, and easy access from our doorstep to miles of farm field trails and beautiful backroads for walks, hikes, bikes, and runs in all seasons (check out our visitors guidebook for more info). You are walking distance from the local White Creek Country Store, which has great to-go breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and ice cream! HEALTH: The Crik House has a built in ER Recovery Ventilation System which will bring in fresh air before and after your stay to reduce the risk of exposure to any viruses. The space will be cleaned and kept clear for a minimum of 24 hours before the next guest arrives. Guest access Parking is directly beside the house. There is an EV/ Tesla charger for your use. Please let us know if you want tips on biking, running, or walking routes. Other things to note FIRE SIREN: The Crik House sits next to the White Creek Volunteer Fire Department- whom we love. Do not be alarmed (pun intended), but as part of your rural Americana experience, you may be treated to the fire siren from our volunteer fire department next door. The siren is triggered about once a month on average so you may or may not be treated to an unexpected alert. Other fun Crik sounds, perhaps unfamiliar to city dwellers... If you leave your windows open at night you may hear owls, coyote calls, foxes (who sound terrifying but are just talking to each other), cows lowing, a distant train whistle from the Cambridge crossing, and the church bell on Sunday mornings at 9am. Depending on the season, the crows may also choose to join in the fun earlier in the morning than you might like, but that is the risk of country life with the windows open! SPEAKING OF WINDOWS OPEN... please keep the front door shut and use the screens on the sliding door if you keep it open. We live in farm country, and so do flies, mosquities, moths, etc., none of which we want in our house! ART: Most of the art in the Crik House is by local creator, Jill Burks: jillburks dot com MUST BRING: if you plan to walk on anything other than a road, rainboots are strongly encouraged. It gets muddy in the fields and rainboots are easy to hose off. THE NEIGHBORHOOD: The Crik House is located in the "historic district" of White Creek. There are many beautiful houses dating to the 1800s, but there are also some historic structures in disrepair- including the massive White Creek Tavern directly across the street. We have big plans for this in the not too distant future, but for now we ask that our guests appreciate it for its possibilities, rather than judge its current state!
