As my 2 year old throws another toy on the floor suddenly he twists his head as he gets distracted; his eyes widen as they meet the massive trees filling the view of the windows. “I don’t know, I think we’re lost” my wife anxiously muttered as she white knuckles the wheel on the bumpy gravel drive. I popped my whole body around and exclaimed “We’re going somewhere no one knows about. A hidden place. The Secret Land!” That little car ride became an important day as we made our way nervously down the overgrown ½ mile driveway with keys in hand in December 2022. We decided shortly after moving onto the 30-acre riverfront property that we had to share it with others! Hello there! I'm Jewel. My wife and I are the owners of the property we lovingly call The Secret Land. We started with a massive clean-up of hoarded belongings left on one side of the property and a demolition process of over 10 outbuildings that month and hauled away tons of trash, cars, boats, buildings, and more. We started in the old farmhouse on the property making a home for our 2 children to enjoy. We then switched to the riverfront side of the property hand cutting trails, limbing thousands of trees, and slowly, painstakingly in the February snow building an intentional space for guests to enjoy. We drove nails into reclaimed lumber, we shed blood with many…many injuries, and we doubted if it was possible. We made mistake after mistake and believed that if we just got up in the morning and did what was in front of us, we could welcome just one person to enjoy a still moment by the river, with campfire warming their boots, to sit and just be. This property was a hidden gem for over 100 years and as the new caretakers of the land, it was up to us to make it come to life! We welcomed our first guest April 1st, 2023 and the rest is history. In 2023, we welcomed over 400 guests onto the land and are learning with each guest, and each conversation how important it is to keep working on this space for others. We’ve welcomed guests of all ages and backgrounds with stories that have kept us motivated, allowed us to celebrate, evolve our approach, change our vision, and opened our hearts. Some moments particularly memorable have been a girlfriend who booked a stay while her boyfriend wanted to enjoy a day in the mountains after being diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. A sweet family from the UK that was visiting Washington for the first time and spent 2 days cuddling our dogs asking to stay for a while longer, even offering to help us build our little cabin resort. A loving couple from Seattle who came back many times with gifts and food for our son. They helped us rehabilitate one of our rescue dogs and even jumped on our tractor to create a new area for the chickens. And lastly, all the questions, comments, and stories we’ve gotten from so many couples that ask us how to do what we’re doing. Those many conversations with young couples that want land, and space, and to share their passions but feel a little lost on how to start have really been a driving force. All these guests have held a large space within our hearts and kept us going. All that’s missing is you! We’re looking forward to entering the next chapter of our little woodsy resort and in 2024, we want to welcome you to enter a place that’s been waiting for you. We invite guests onto our land with acceptance and kindness always. This is a safe space that my wife and I found to be one of the first places we can freely hold hands without stares from anyone; well beside a deer or owl. This land is particularly important as I have autism and it provides me with an important sensory experience. We support you as you are. We invite you to the freedom of strolling this land owned by a loving couple who'd love to share our happiness and warmth with you today. We invite you as friends and hope you leave as family! Cheers, Jewel and Maile ⚡Intimate Resort Promise: A Couples-Only Space In April 2023, we opened doors and welcomed our first Airbnb guest. I couldn't have imagined how we would evolve. We licensed as a wedding and event venue and started creating The Secret Land for the wildly in love. We knew starting a wedding venue wouldn't be fast, easy, and cheap--especially with purchasing a 30-acre fully hoarded property with no car access, no equipment, and without any savings to help build this vision we cooked up one night sitting on our beach. We thought about renting our little spots on Airbnb to help develop our reputation and a little revenue while we build our venue and undertake the massive challenge we signed up for that chilly January day skipping rocks along the river. What we discovered is that we were meant to welcome guests! We decided to skip the fuss of a wedding venue as Enumclaw boasts many amazing places and stick with what we know best—intimate 5-star getaways! ⚡ At The Secret Land, we prioritize three core values in our vision: Intimacy for LGBTQ couples like us, privacy throughout our spaces, and casual relaxation under the stars, next to a warm campfire. ⚡ We forged a space for guests to rent for: → Proposals → Birthdays → Anniversaries → Solo guests to unplug & recharge → Friends to reconnect → We even rent to guests who need one last trip for their pup before crossing over the rainbow bridge–wow how special is that! Seeing our old doggies waddle around the land is one of my favorite sights to behold! Welcoming short-term guests was exactly what we wanted to do. And we’ve got you covered with a few options! Here are our accommodations: → RV on Red Creek → Three off-grid cabins with bed accommodations → One off-grid cabin with camping pads (no bed) → One off-grid cabin with camping pads (no bed) → Two Riverfront spaces for day use, tent spaces, and picnics. We understand that we could heavily develop the land but we don't want to---like ever!! We're a debt-free business and cash flow is everything so we're a bit more intentional than other landowners. Our facilities must be able to ensure guests' experiences that align with our vision and each site is carefully planned with guest restrictions in mind. We're declaring an intimate resort promise so that we let others know that we're a small resort right now and forever! If your getaway vision is with ample guests, large parties, or social events such as inviting impromptu guests, The Secret Land is not the best place for your getaway. This intimate resort promise is near and dear to our hearts and it means we can come closer to living out our purpose on the land and in our family business. Thank you for allowing us to honor our vision of intimacy on our land.
