The Location- Come and visit Lake Atitlan, one of the “Most beautiful" lakes in the world! There is a beautiful private beach view of Lake Atitlan and the volcanos, just 100 steps (not stairs) from your room. Here you will be immersed in the Modern Mayan culture and lifestyle. It is conveniently located only a 30-minute public taxi boat ride from Panajachel. Most visitors and locals utilize the convenient taxi boats for getting around the lake. After arriving in Panajachel, Lake Atitlan, the only way to get to Jaibalito is via the Lancha/Water taxi Boat. There are no cars, trucks or Chicken buses in Jaibalito! Although we do have TukTuks (little red three wheeled taxi). Please feel free to ask for assistance at any time. Scott and Leisa live part-time in the adjoining "Casa Sirena" . If they are not on the property, our local Property Manager, Antonio, is always available. You can park your vehicle at the private paid parking area near Muelle Tzanjuyu. Sorry, no pets allowed. The Property- is surrounded by flower gardens, culinary and medicinal herbs and towering Avocado trees, a variety of banana trees and an Arabica coffee grove. There is a private stairway down to the (seasonal) river for another place to relax and explore. After leaving the public pier, walk up the Main Sidewalk, approximately 50 meters and turn to the right (just past El Indigo green iron gate) and enter on the rock path which leads to the house. Our location is one of the quietest locations of the village. The house area- This rental offers a private, spacious living area, a private bathroom with hot shower and two bedrooms. It is great for two to four guests. Free Wifi is included. Bedroom 1 is set up with one queen bed. Bedroom 2 has a double bed. The completely furnished kitchen includes a microwave, toaster oven, stove/oven and refrigerator. Enjoy a free sample of our famous coffee grown and roasted in Jaibalito. An unlimited supply of purified water is provided. We installed a water purification system consisting of cartridge filters and an Ultraviolet lamp. All the interior faucets and showers in the house are supplied with the drinkable purified water. The septic system at the property should be no problem if you put all the waste paper in the trash container, as is typical in most of Central America. The only waste going down the toilet drain should be the waste out of your body. This is a semi tropical climate and insects thrive in the area. You will probably need to apply Mosquito repellent regularly, depending on the season. Weekly Housekeeping service is included. NO SMOKING INSIDE PLEASE! Extra Amenities- When you book the Casa Sirena or Casa Grande de la Sirena, we will be happy to prepare our traditional underground, fully tiled and private Mayan Temescal sauna room for you. The Temescal has room for two persons. The gas fired porcelain water pot will be started and after one hour, you pour a small amount of water over the rocks. This creates a steamy sauna room where you will sit on wooden benches and relax. You can mix the hot and cold water to your liking, pour it over yourself and experience Mayan bathing. Please advise 2-4 hours in advance to allow for preparation. You will be relaxed and cleansed when the treatment is complete. The cost will be Q200 / $21 per use. Laundry Service available for Q35/$5 a load. Your laundry can be machine washed and line or machine dried at the property. Extra Housekeeping: Q35/$5 per hour. We can also assist with arrangements for your transportation. Private and Public shuttle van service is available in Panajachel for transportation to/from the Guatemala City Airport, Antigua, the Chichicastanango market and many other locations. We use Xocomil Transportation in Pana. They have an office near the Tzanjuyu dock. Public taxi boats (lancha) to Panajachel (the main business center at the Lake) and other villages are approximately a 30-minute boat ride. Boats stop in Jaibalito about every 20 minutes from 6 am till 7:30 pm, starting on the hour. A Private boat can be arranged anytime. If you need a light bulb replaced, the gas tank is empty or have questions what to do while at the Lake, just ask our Hostess! NO SMOKING INSIDE PLEASE! Local information and travel tips: After arriving in Panajachel, Lake Atitlan, the only way to get to Jaibalito is via the Lancha/Boat. The well-marked and most amazing scenic hiking trail to Santa Cruz is about a 45-60 minutes hike with a medium loaded backpack. We recommend hiking during daylight only. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO NOT HIKE the trail to/from Tzu’nuna, where there have been many cases of robberies reported. While in Jaibalito, business is conducted with Guatemalan cash, Quetzals. There are a few ATM's (Cajero 5 B) in Panajachel but none here in Jaibalito. Before departing Pana, just ask around, "? Por favor, donde esta a Cinco Bay (5B)?" The ATM will only dispense 100Q bills. Maximum withdrawl is about Q2,000/ $260 per day. We bank at Banco BAM on Calle Principal (Main Street) and they seem to be Tourist friendly. Some local banks may not allow you to come in to exchange or make change and the armed guard will usually tell you at the door, "No cambio!". Get some small bills 5Q, 10Q and 20Q before you leave Panajachel (Pana) and head to Jaibalito. Try a restaurant or tienda (small store) for change. There are a few restaurants in Jaibalito. El Indigio is in front of the house towards the lake. They serve meals and drinks all day. There is Hans Schaeffers' Posada Jaibalito, up the hill and on the Left. Freshly prepared Meals, cold drinks and dormitory lodging available. Open daily. Club Ven Aca may still be closed due to Covid, it is down the hill to our beach and left across the river. Bar, restaurant, Hot tub and infinity pool. Hotel La Casa del Mundo is still a little bit further past Ven Aca. Fantastic family style meals and the restaurant has a cliff side view across the lake. It is best to make a dinner reservation early in the morning. They all are distinct in their services and are all highly recommended for great atmosphere and meals. Each location has their own website. They are all within just a few minutes’ walk from the house. The Public Lancha's that travel around the lake arrive/depart from the Jaibalito public pier (muelle) about every 20 minutes. At Panajachel, you would want to go to the (Zan Hooyoo) Tzanjuyu dock. After you first arrive in Panajachel, this location is at the bottom of the hill then to the right thru the gas station. You may have to wait for the boat to fill up before it departs, but generally they depart every 20 minutes starting on the hour. To/from Pana is about 30 minutes. The Lanchas operate from 6AM to about 7:30PM every day. From Jaibalito, they go Left to Panajachel via Santa Cruz and Paxanax. They go Right to the villages of Tzununa, San Marcos, San Pablo, San Juan then to San Pedro. Lancha/Boat taxi to and from the Jaibalito pier is Q 15/$2 per person to/from Panajachel. It is generally Q 7.5 per major village. IE Panajachel to Santa Cruz, then Santa Cruz to Jaibalito. Do not pay more than listed above, but do not argue with the Lancha Crew if you don't have close to the correct change. Have your money ready to pay the First Mate as you leave the pier. He will usually station himself between the front of the lancha and the exit from the dock (muelle). If you have more than a few suitcases, treat them as an extra passenger, Q 15, for 3-4 suitcases. A Private Lancha may be rented for between Q 150-200/$25for a one-way trip from Pana to Jaibalito. They will take you direct from Panajachel to the Jaibalito pier. No waiting required. Just ask at the pier "Quiero un Lancha privada a Jaibalito por favor". The Lancheros will probably approach you first, as you walk towards the dock from the top of the ramp! Remember Q10 = 1.25 USD! Yes, Locals pay less, Expats pay a bit more and Touristas pay a little more still. Tourism is what supports our local economy here. Take advantage of the little Red Tuk-Tuks (3 wheeled covered taxi scooter carts) while visiting many of the Villages around the lake. The fee is 5Q per person per one-way trip, an inexpensive ride from the pier to destinations within city limits and back again. Tip for extra services. Grocery shopping- If you plan on fixing some of your own meals, before leaving Pana ask a Tuk Tuk driver to take you to La Torre supermarket (our favorite) accepts chip cards and has an ATM, Dispensa Familiar supermarket (accepts chip cards and has an ATM), Chalo's tienda, or Sandras. All have a good selection of groceries that cater to locals and Tourists alike. Heavier items like soda, bottled water or cerveza can be purchased in Jaibalito. No need carrying them on the boat if you don't have too. There are several “Tiendas”, a locally owned and operated country store where you order through the window and the server gets your groceries for you. There is also, just up the Main street on the right, Mercado Jaibalito which caters more to the Gringo community. It has fresh cheese, vegetables and fruits and other miscellaneous items. It is open at 8AM and closes at 4:15PM. The Dry season, typically from November through May averages 55*F to 80*F with average humidity, very comfortable. Some days may be very windy. During the Wet season it is typical to have beautiful sunny mornings before the frequent afternoon clouds and rain. You will get wet if you forget your umbrella! You will want a light jacket for the evenings throughout the entire year. We have enjoyed the Lake every month of the year! Always carry a flashlight with you when you will be out and about after 5 PM. Street lighting is few and far between. The electricity in the village may go out for brief periods during very windy or heavy rain weather conditions. We have a backup generator for extended outages. The residents of Jaibalito are mostly Mayan and speak both their native language of Kakchiqel and Spanish. They are kind and helpful. There is a small group of Foreigners that reside here as well. There are no retail stores, gas stations, movie theaters or night clubs. Those are at Panajachel. There are five churches in the village. You will know when they are having a service. The music is loud and catchy and the doors are wide open! You will also hear an occasional Air Raid Siren go off in the afternoon, followed by a loudspeaker. These announcements are for the Community, such as "The Doctor will be at the Clinic tomorrow" or "It is Kids movie night at Casita de la Sirena at 6 PM", not a hurricane warning or such. Song birds, children playing, barking dogs, crowing roosters, frequent "Buenas Dias" with a big smile, and the early morning corn grinder for making fresh tortilla dough are all typical sounds of Caserio Jaibalito. You may hear an occasional Mayan version of “haayeeeee” or “yeehaaaaw” on Friday or Saturday nights. All part of the charm of this remote village called Caserio Jaibalito. We know you will enjoy your visit but don't tell everyone about Jaibalito. We want the village to remain simple and quaint!
