Mountain Nest
This cozy wood and stone cabin is located at the top of a mountain in a small Mayan village. The cabin overlooks the mountains and is surrounded by nature and tranquility. We are a 30-minute drive from the village of Lanquin (on a bumpy dirt road in very poor condition) and then a 200-meter walk on a rocky and sometimes muddy and slippery mountain path! If you are an adventurous nature lover and want to wake up in the clouds to an epic view, then this place is for you!! The space Please read all of the details, especially regarding access, to avoid any surprises and to make sure this place is for you! It's worth it. Note that for bookings between November 15th, 2024 and March 3rd, 2025, we will not be on the property. The only food that will be offered are traditional meals prepared by our neighbor. The cabin overlooks the Cahabon river (same river that feeds Semuc Champey) and all rooms have large windows where you can enjoy the rolling green hills and soaring birds (even from the bedroom and bathroom)! You can shower or take a nice warm bath while overlooking the mountains. The cabin is facing east and the sunrises are worth getting up for (you don't even need to move from your bed). It's a perfect place to become inspired or just to relax and unwind. We recommend staying at least 3 nights so you can have a full day to enjoy Semuc Champey and extra days to relax or pick from a list of many other activities in the area (hiking, chocolate making, rafting, river tubing and caving). We can help organize all activities as well as shuttles to your next destination. SLEEPING ARRANGEMENT: There is a queen bed on the 1st level and a small loft right above that has 2 single beds. The access to the loft is via a ladder, so it's not recommended for people who are not comfortable with this. The cabin is perfect for 2 people and fits 4 people comfortably (as long as you're okay to share bedroom and bathroom access). ACCESS: As we are located in a remote area, there is limited public transport from Lanquin and Semuc Champey. If you are coming with your own vehicle, you MUST have a 4x4 with HIGH CLEARANCE (not a small SUV like RAV4, CRV, etc) in order to arrive as the road to our place and Semuc Champey is in very poor condition. Parking is available 200 meters from the property and from there it's a 5-10 minute walk (NO ROAD ACCESS TO CABIN). We will assist you on this walk and help carry your luggage! Rubber boots and walking sticks will be provided if it's extremely muddy and/or slippery (months of November- February are usually VERY muddy and slippery!) For those without a vehicle, private transport can easily be arranged from Lanquin and Semuc Champey. Prices are: Q125 per ride to/from Lanquin and Q150 per ride to/from Semuc Champey (Q150/Q200 for 3-4 people). Additional Q100 surcharge if arriving in Lanquin after 8:30pm or leaving Mountain Nest before 5am. FOOD: If we are here during you stay, we offer breakfast, lunches/pack lunches and delicious homemade dinners. Our meals are mostly vegetarian and we're vegan friendly. We also offer drinks, smoothies, beer, wine, etc. We will send you our menu upon booking so you are familiar with what we offer. If we are not here, our neighbor can prepare typical dishes. The cabin has a fully stocked kitchen so feel free to bring your own food. Note that there is no grocery store in Lanquin and options to buy food on your date of arrival can be limited. It's best to stock up in the city of Coban about 1.5 hours from Lanquin. Once at the property there are even fewer options (only small tiendas with eggs, rice, chips, cookies, etc). Basics like oil, spices, coffee, tea and drinking water are provided. CRITTERS: Remember that we live amongst nature and you may see spiders and scorpions. Although they seem big and scary, we have never had issues with bites or stings and they are NOT poisonous. Since they were here first, we try to avoid killing them and rather replace them back outdoors. We can come to help you catch these critters or show you how to catch them! INTERNET: Forget the internet and connect with nature! If you do need to connect with the cloud, you can purchase a data package through our loaner phone chip (Q15 for 3 days). PAYMENT: Payment for food, transport, activities, etc is CASH ONLY. We accept PeyPal + 8% surcharge. Guest access You MUST have a 4x4 with high clearance in order to arrive as the last 4km is a dirt/rock road in very poor condition (transport can be arranged from Lanquin if you don't have a 4x4). Small SUVs like RAV4, CRV, etc will not make it. The road does not come all the way to the cabin. You will park your car 200m from the cabin in a safe spot and will need to walk through a mountain path (that is rocky, hilly and can be muddy and slippery) the rest of the way. Check-in is until 9:00pm only!! If you are arriving in Lanquín past 9pm we cannot accommodate your first night. Other things to note The 200m path from the parking area to the house is NOT RECOMMENDED for the elderly or people who have difficulty walking. It can be extremely slippery and difficult if it's been raining. Plan to arrive BEFORE DARK to avoid walking the path at night. We provide rubber boots and walking sticks in case it's muddy or raining! Unfortunately, the path is not on our land and we do not have permission to fix it from the owners.
