Please note that the yard is large but not fenced. IS THE NEIGHBORHOOD SAFE? Yes. Before it was on Airbnb, the home was our residence for two years. We've had no problems with safety or any issues related to personal property. There are few homes on our street and our area remains relatively quiet and peaceful. We realize everyone has their own level of what makes them feel comfortable and we hope that this might help our guests decide if the McGill-Branch Home is right for them. The English basement kitchen is not accessible to guests. Other things to note For those interested in Civil War history and the history of this property (McGill-Branch Home): Captain Edward B. Branch (later Major Branch) purchased the property in 1862 and occupied the home while serving as the confederate quarter master for Petersburg during the Civil War. Because of Petersburg's crucial importance as both a supply and transportation hub, the weight of responsibility placed on Major Branch would have been large. He was a participant in many important decisions and actions relating to war materials and troops as evidenced by records deposited in the National Archives. After the war, Branch became Petersburg's superintendent of schools. In 1882, he partnered with Governor William Cameron to pack the Petersburg Board of education with nine Readjuster supporters (six white and three black). This resulted in the hiring of black teachers in the Petersburg public schools, the removal of 25% of the white teachers and the placement of black principals over white teachers. These actions were revolutionary in their political and social consequences.
