The valley is utility free, so each landowner is responsible for their own power, water, fuel, etc. These off-the-grid cabins are how most area residents live. Stay with us for a true Alaska experience! We’re located at Mile 56.5 McCarthy Road, approximately 3.5 miles before the end of the road and the footbridge that accesses McCarthy and Kennicott. Meadow Cabin is one of three accommodations offered by McCarthy Cabins, each on separate properties. The other two include Swift Creek Cabin and Bluff Cabin, also listed on Airbnb. Experience cozy Alaska cabin life — a wonderful addition to your adventure in the Last Frontier. To visit the ghost towns of McCarthy and Kennicott, guests drive from their cabin another 3.5 miles to the end of the McCarthy Road at mile 60. At the footbridge, there is a privately owned fee-based parking area for guests visiting McCarthy and Kennicott. From here, it's just over a 1/2-mile walk into McCarthy and five miles further to Kennicott. There is a shuttle service that picks up and drops off in McCarthy and at the footbridge throughout the day. Although walking to McCarthy is an easy and short walk, we highly recommend taking the shuttle round-trip to Kennicott — save your energy for exploring the amazing historic mill town, Root Glacier trail, etc. When your day is complete, you can relax and enjoy the privacy and serenity of Meadow Cabin! Feel free to ask any questions you may have, I’m happy to help! Other things to note Common Questions: Can we drive to the cabin? Yes! What happens to our trash? Pack it In, Pack it Out! Please take all trash, food, and gear with you, as there is no landfill in the area. If you prefer not to haul out your trash, there’s a disposal fee ($25 per 13-gallon bag) to cover the cost of having it hauled out. What about water? Drinking water is provided through a Berkey Water Filter. Non-potable water is also provided for dishes and showers in limited quantities. I have to haul the water to Meadow Cabin a 1/2 mile, so please conserve as best you can. Do the cabins have WiFi? The cabins are WiFi-free, but McCarthy and Kennicott have hotspots provided by Copper Valley Telephone (CVT). CVT and Verizon cell service work well in the area. AT&T does not work in the area. How is our food kept cold? Meadow Cabin has a small propane refrigerator, a luxury in McCarthy! Coolers with ice or cold packs also work great. Please keep all food/beverages inside your cabin to avoid attracting bears. Ice is sometimes limited in McCarthy, so bring plenty! Do you allow pets? While we love pets, we unfortunately cannot accommodate them. Being off-grid without traditional electricity makes it difficult to properly clean pet fur and other pet-related messes. Thanks for understanding! Is there gas in McCarthy? There is usually unleaded fuel near the end of the McCarthy Road but it's best to fill up in Glennallen, Kenny Lake, or Chitina before heading down McCarthy Road, just in case! Is there a store in the area? There is a small general store in McCarthy offering basic items but it’s a good idea to bring what you need! Explore this historic area and enjoy a true Alaska experience at one of our cozy McCarthy Cabins. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. I'm happy to help!
