The idea of a Bed and Breakfast on Tuxan kin Che (pronounced Too-shan, translated as "Place of Trees") struck us as perfect for travelers who come to Campeche, drawn by its "off the beaten path" opportunities for culture and ecology. Late in the 80's we became caretakers of Tuxan, a 12-acre fruit tree orchard on the edge of Campeche City, Campeche, Mexico. Since 1982 the city has transformed from a lost gem to a rediscovered treasure. In 2000, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. Tuxan (pronounced Too-shan), also has evolved, from a simple orchard to a living creative inspiration, an artist's home with a growing library and a green palette. It is a reflection of a lifetime of exposure to the Maya World and my love of Nature, people and the arts. Building began in 1990. Stone, wood and thatch combine with cement, electricity and plumbing systems to create today's Tuxan. Tuxan is home to thousands of trees including over a dozen varieties of fruit trees such as: Sapote, Cashew, Mandarin, Orange, Lime, Avocado, Mango, Banana, Coconut, Almond, Nance, Cinnamon, Guanabana, Guayaba, Mamey and more! Hardwoods include Mahogany, Ciricote and Cedar. Our gardens offer an array of flowers, lawns and foliage. Every evening and into the night a chorus of crickets and frogs might sing to the dance of a zillion fireflies. Today we can give you lessons on how to get into an hamaca. We have acquired an hamaca loom and hope to soon teach hamaca weaving too. The Region: The Yucatán Peninsula offers many Historical and Natural wonders. On the Caribbean in Quintana Roo State, Tulúm, Cobá and the Xían Kan Reserve are much visited. In Yucatan, Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, the Puuc Route and Celestún Reserve are major attractions. Campeche, on the Gulf of Mexico, is little known by most though it boasts more archaeological sites than any other state in the Mexican Republic. For Nature lovers there are many miles of undeveloped coastline, as well as the Biosphere Reserve of Calakmul, Mexico’s largest Natural Reserve (5000 Km Sq of jungle, jaguars, toucans, and Mayan ruins, also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO). Our Region is alluring. First founded by the Maya, Campeche City later became Spain’s first settlement and port in the region. In the fishing port of Champotón, where a river by the same name spills into the Gulf, is an archaeological site under excavation. Here Spaniards first battled Maya warriors who won, delaying the subsequent invasion some 50 years! Edzná is another nearby site nestled within medium height jungles, at its peak home to some 35,000 Maya. Also nearby are 19th century ex-haciendas that are well worth a day trip. These reflect the grandeur of European families who accumulated wealth exploiting Campeche's rich natural resources. Further North is El Tigre, a beautiful site skirted by the lily lined Candelária River. Beyond, in the State of Chiapas, glorious Palenque... all these destinations can be reached by car or ADO bus. Local tour operators offer guided tours. Tuxan offers accommodation to travellers on such journeys. Those following the Maya Route interested in experiencing an alternative setting where fruit hangs from trees, and where birds, dragonflies and the local people add song and colour to each day. Here travellers pause for restful inspiration and each day offers opportunity to exchange experiences and explore local treasures. Your stay at Tuxan will be hosted by Doña Emma our cousin from France and Doña Nella from Guatemala whose family have been caretakers at Tuxan for the last 16 years. Guest access By booking a Cottage / Casita you will have access to a full bathroom with hot water shower, the common verandah dining area, a small "dipping pool", the gardens and the orchard, and, by arrangement, the kitchen facilities. Food and drink in the kitchen is not included although potable water is provided. Long term guests are welcome to make special arrangements with the on site hosts for food preparation and storage. During your stay Between Doña Emma and Doña Nella's family there should always be somebody on site to help with any questions you might have. Doña Nella offers traditional breakfast for those of you who enjoy home cooking, fresh eggs, beans, tortillas, ripe fruit, yoghurt and juice, truly a delicious way to begin the day and fill your belly and smile :) Other things to note Being in the country, expect country sounds and critters. Take common sense precautions such as shaking out your shoes and clothes before putting them on, wearing shoes when walking about, using insect repellent as is your wont. If you have a pet, its good behaviour is your responsibility. Any behaviour that results in damage to people or property is also your responsibility. Pets are not allowed on the beds nor the linens. Wi-Fi reception is spotty on the property. Please take care to deposit waste paper and trash in the receptacles provided and NOT in the toilet, thank you.
