"Adobe House" - Countryside Home Cajamarca
A unique, comfortable and close to nature eco-house with peaceful views of countryside, mountains and hills, yet close to all amenities being only 5 minutes to the airport and 15 minutes to the centre of Cajamarca city. Its 3 bedrooms can accommodate up to 7 adult guests (1 "queen", 1 double, 1 twin with trundle). Modern conveniences include: wifi, full cell phone service, TV, laundry, plus rustic charm of open fireplaces, exposed beams, traditional water feature “pileta” and wide verandas. The space “Adobe House” sits in three acres of verdant pastureland on a small family run dairy farm in the Cajamarca valley which has a long tradition of milk, cheese and other dairy products and famous as one of the major dairy “cuencas” of Peru. We designed and built “Adobe House” in 2003 with the help of Cajamarca’s foremost architect, builder and skilled local artisans. Almost all materials used to build "Adobe House" were sourced locally such as adobe blocks and terracotta roof tiles; and timber from the farm’s own sustainably managed eucalyptus plantation. As the name suggests, we chose to build our house using adobe, the traditional building material of the Andes, which absorbs heat from the sun during the day. After many years living and working in rural areas of Central and South America our holiday home design was inevitably inspired by our personal experiences. “Adobe House” follows a single story ranch house style, with wide verandas facing East, South and North-West, providing various shaded sitting areas to enjoy the diverse moods created by the sun’s daily traverse across the clear blue Cajamarcan sky. At “Adobe House” you cannot help but feel close to nature. All rooms enjoy views of the colourful gardens and pastures, usually with cows or horses grazing, with mature eucalyptus and willow trees beyond. A stream runs along the Northern perimeter of the property and through the mature woodland which is a great place to stroll and explore nature. There is also an abundance of wildlife such as various Andean flycatchers, egrets and hummingbirds that visit the house and gardens frequently. Designed to maximize social interaction, Adobe House is open planned while using distinct spaces to connect activities such as food preparation, dining, socializing and relaxing. Using locally crafted traditional stone (piedra caliza) from the quarries of Porcon, the architectural theme flows from the kitchen and breakfast bar area, through the circular feature fireplace with conical copper chimney and living area with traditional adobe seating known as “poyas”, before rounding a small bar and finally giving way to the sunlit main entrance and foyer. The use of skylights, high vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and an abundance of windows gives Adobe House an airy and bright ambience throughout. With 2 full bathrooms and a guest powder room, 3 three separate bedrooms (master with fireplace, French doors to the veranda and ensuite with large tub) “Adobe House” provides excellent accommodation for a stress-free family vacation, comfortable home from home base while exploring the Cajamarca region, or “rest stop” on your Peruvian adventure. Outside, the same concept prevails, from the private lawns for sunbathing to the tranquil sound of water cascading down the traditional stone fountain (pileta); to the firepit enjoying the sight, sound and warmth of a roaring fire, toasting marshmallows, firing up the BBQ, and looking for shooting stars in the black Cajamarcan night sky. Guest access Guests have full and exclusive access to the house, gardens, fields and woodland as described in the Welcome Booklet. Fresh milk can be obtained at the dairy farm - and guests can also watch the cows being milked. Ask for the farmer, Sr Ernesto Rejas at the dairy stables El Herraje.
