Other things to note ADDITIONAL BOOKING DETAILS - Requests for stays of less than seven days will be considered on a case-by-case basis, but the norm during peak summer months and holiday periods is to require a seven-day minimum. - Christmas and New Year’s are separate weeks with mid-holiday changeovers unless otherwise agreed. - We’re unable to accommodate Sunday arrivals. As for Sunday departures, guests will need to manage their own departure logistics. SOLAR POWER The house is powered by a new roof-mounted 15,000 kilowatt, 27-panel solar system that runs everything except the dryer and the air conditioning, both of which are powered by the local electric utility (BPL). The solar system avoids the unpredictable and disruptive power outages that are an unfortunate part of life on the island. BPL automatically recharges the solar batteries in the unlikely event that their charge falls below 20% (overnight charge levels typically remain above 75% and are back to 100% by late morning). The house does NOT have a generator, but it would take an extended outage and overcast weather to fully discharge the batteries -- something that has happened only once. We're actively reviewing options to further minimize the risk of power interruptions. GOLF CART ACCESS If you rent a golf cart, we have a private path leading down to the "lower road," aka Queen's Highway, where we have a parking area. The parking area, which is outside the gated settlement area, provides quick access to the middle and south end of the island (rental carts are NOT allowed inside the settlement). It's a short walk from our house and down the path to the parking area. NO GOLF CART? NO PROBLEM! If you’re unable or unwilling to rent a golf cart, rest assured that our location is ideal for getting around by bike or on foot. Three of the main restaurants on the island are within walking distance, and the other three offer shuttle service. DOCK SPACE A private dock space is available nearby for an additional charge. LONG HISTORY Hope Chest has been a beloved vacation getaway for a US family since 1959. The "Upalong" area that it's located in is widely considered to be among the most desirable locations on the island -- in part because its high elevation ensures delightful ocean breezes. The original bungalow-style house was destroyed in Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Many items were recovered and re-used in "Hope Chest 2.0." The new house features modern conveniences and is more than twice the size of its predecessor. MOBILITY ISSUES We have one of the highest locations in the settlement area, roughly 40 feet above sea level. This gives us wonderful ocean breezes and spectacular views, but it may be problematic for individuals with mobility issues. Please reach out for more information if this is a concern. BEACHFRONT SAFETY The beach in front of the house is constantly changing. During warmer months, when southerly seas prevail and add sand, it's often safe to swim directly in front of our stairs. At other times, however, limestone rocks may be exposed at low tide and we recommend walking a few hundred feet to the left for safer swimming (near the cell tower and before the tall pink house).
