The rich kelp beds around the bay make this a year-round feeding ground for grey whales, and it’s easy to catch a whale-watching trip out of the harbor to see them up close. Newport’s extensive working Bayfront and the Oregon Coast Aquarium are a half hour to the south; Lincoln City’s outlet mall and Chinook Winds Casino are the same distance to the north. Close by, you’ll find craft beer, restaurants, a bakery, art, and a spa and golf at Salishan, and in between, loads of beaches, rocky overlooks, and trail hiking.
