Right out your door-art galleries, specialty boutiques, Tip Top Coffee, famous Purple Fiddle for entertainment, stroll along Black Water River, walk to hiking trails, 15 min drive to Timberline Mountain/Canaan State Park/Whitegrass! 30-minutes to Deep Creek Lake The space Welcome to the oldest wooden structure resting in the heart of the historic town of Thomas and one of the finest historical renovations in the state of WV. This historic building was built in the 1890’s. The large apartment on the second level is 1,838 square feet. The discovery of coal in 1884 turned Thomas from a pit stop to a hopping mountain town, bustling with immigrants from all over Europe. At one time, Thomas’s Front Street boasted an opera house, a saloon and one of the first railway stations with electric lights. A statewide Italian-language paper was even published here. In 1901, in less than two hours, nearly half of Thomas (83 buildings) was destroyed by a fire. This building survived the devastating fire. The city was quickly rebuilt with fine hotels and a new opera house. By 1915, more than 2,000 people lived in Thomas. A person strolling down Front Street during that time was greeted with many sights, sounds and smells; the sky appearing and disappearing above the awnings; friendly greetings from merchant through their open doors; the aroma of roasted peanuts; a loud train whistle; conversations in Italian from balconies above; and a procession of store fronts, including this building, bursting with goods and services. But the local Davis Coal and Coke Co. faltered in the 1940s, and the last underground coal mine closed in 1956. Thus, the demise and abandonment of many of the commercial buildings in Thomas from the late 1900s to just this past decade. Thomas was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. In 2014, Mary McGowan and Blaine McVicker, discovered this landmark and decided to dedicate the past 8 years to saving and historically restoring this once abandoned yet beautiful building. Their intention was always for the community and guests of Thomas to enjoy this unique structure that represents the past and will stand for the future. Cook an Italian meal in the gourmet kitchen offering an extraordinary intimate culinary experience combining a taste of the past with passion for regional history in this bona fide WV landmark. The ultimate elegant and intimate Italian dining experience in Historic Thomas, will take you back in time to prosperity and Italian conversations with vibrancy and romance in the air, as you dine under the gorgeous crystal chandelier and dimmed lights. Also, be sure to enjoy the outdoors right from the apartment with the very large deck with rocking chairs and dining tables, as well as the adorable front porch overlooking front street and waterfalls. Guest reviews of other Davis/Thomas apartments highlight the lack of and desire for outdoor accessibility from the living space...well here you have it, in both the front and back of the apartment on the same level! Original 1890's staircase and railing along with original wood floors throughout apartment. For safety reasons, the apartment is not conducive to children 5 and under due to centrally located step staircase. Most certainly this will be an experience to make special memories! This historic property also provides a timeless setting for a truly unique WV wedding or special event. The country scenic elegance of Thomas paired with this landmark venue with large commercial 1st floor, sets the tone for exceptional special events. Thomas was voted one of the top 10 beautiful small towns in WV. In December 2023, Thomas was listed by Architectural Digest Magazine as the #1 hidden gem of mountain towns!
