Peaceful Shoreline House
An airy, bright, comfortable space with an open plan living area warmed by a wood-fired cookstove (a 4 burner gas range with oven for cooking is also available). Large windows with antique glass offer beautiful views of meadows and ocean. Doors open on two wood decks. The island features sandy beaches, coves with smooth stones, spectacular hikes, fishing, and swimming in a fresh water quarry. During summer months the town offers frequent “Town Breakfasts,” concerts, and other community events. The space This classic Maine summer home is located steps away from a sandy beach in a quiet cove, perfect for swimming and for young children. Grassy meadows surround the house, which has views of the ocean on three sides. The kitchen/dining/living area is comfortable and light. A wood stove can warm the house on cool evenings and in colder months. In the summer, doors open to a wrap-around porch, lovely for outdoor lunches or breakfasts. The first-floor corner bedroom has a queen bed and views of the ocean on two sides. The second floor front bedroom has a queen bed and a writing desk and offers views of the ocean and surrounding island. The back bedroom has a double bed and a single bed with views of the meadows. Twenty-five acres of meadow, woods, and pink granite shorefront invite leisurely afternoon strolls. Guest access House will be open when you arrive. Driving directions and other information will be provided once a booking is made. Other things to note Another lovely house shares the property. Perfect to rent separately or jointly for larger groups: search for Peaceful Shoreline Cottage on this site. We have WIFI but the signal works ONLY in the dining room and small study to the left of the entryway. WIFI is also available at the town library, a ten-minute’s drive away. Travel to the Meadow House and to Swans Island requires a 30-minute ferry ride leaving from Bass Harbor, Maine. Maine State Ferry Service operates the ferry and makes 5-6 round trips per day. Advance reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling the Bass Harbor and Swans Island terminals. (Without a reservation we recommend arriving at the terminal at least two hours before the boat is scheduled to depart. And note: even with a reservation you must arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time or your reservation will be forfeited.) A small grocery store is a ten-minute walk away. Though small, it is remarkably well-stocked, with a large selection of meats, lobsters and a limited amount of fresh fish, fresh vegetables, cheese, bread, plus basic necessities. In summer, island eggs and local produce are often available. The store also runs a busy take-out (and picnic table area) with all the classic Maine summer food, from lobster and fried clams, to hot-dogs and French fries. There is no alcohol for sale anywhere on the island. A second house located on the property, the Cove-Side Meadow House, may be rented together with the Shore House for larger gatherings.
