The port in Liepaja is ice free which facilitates transportation between the west and east, including Russia. Liepaja itself has a population of 87,000 and has a history dating back to the 13th century. It is stunning city, regarded to have the largest collection of still erected wooden buildings.The street lamps overflow with floral displays, plus large flower displays in the shapes of animals are scattered throughout the town. It has several bridges spanning the canal and also has its own tram system.
