The house has fully converted to solar energy, but when there is no sun and if the batteries are depleted, the house runs on the grid. In recent years South Africa has been subject to periodic planned blackouts known as loadshedding. As of late 2024 these have been in abeyance, but consult the local agent if you are unsure. Note that the oven does not operate on solar power. If there is no solar and there is loadshedding, the oven will not operate. If there is a break in the energy you will need to reset the oven clock for the oven to work. The oven will not function if the clock is not set. It doesn't matter to what time you set it. The stovetop burners run on gas and are independent from the oven. The gas can is located in the cabinet to the right of the stove. Please turn the gas off when the stovetop is not in use. Cape winters can be chilly. The house has portable heaters, wall heaters and extra duvets/blankets, please don't hesitate to ask about them. Wood and kindling go fast in wintertime, so you may want to add them to your shopping list. Please observe safe fire etiquette!
