Home is located astride the incomparable Newport-Beebee Bike path. Ideal location to teach your youngster to bike safely. Path connects to approximately 20 miles of trails in the US and Canada. Short drive to Jay Peak waterpark and indoor skating rink. Newport Golf Course approximately 7 miles away and Canada a mere 2 miles. Perfect spot to isolate and reflect on the world's craziness. The space Only 3 Summer 2021 weeks still available due to cancellations, last week August and first 2 weeks September 5 Day Minimum during shoulder months of May, June, September, October and November Accepting 2022 Waiting List Reservations. Filling up fast-No deposit until January A beautiful four season Victorian style contemporary home astride the Newport to Canada bike path. The home is located directly on the eastern shore of Lake Memphremagog with a westerly orientation for extended daylight, beautiful lake and mountain views and memorable sunsets. The front door opens on the Newport/Derby bike path 75 feet away. Sorry we do not rent to groups or allow functions or celebration parties. Best spot ever for kids. Safe biking and swimming! The home caters to families with children. The private beach is sandy and shallow (approximately 3 feet for the first 100 feet). Water shoes are recommended as the first 15 feet or so is pebbly and then sandy. Located on a dead end lane with no traffic, perfect for the little ones, home is very private and secluded but only a picturesque 3 mile walk or bike ride down the bike path to downtown Newport and slightly longer to the Canadian border. One hundred feet of lakefront with a sandy private beach very close to 'Black Rock', arguably the warmest water on the lake. Home comes equipped with a dock and a little Walker Bay 10' row boat, a two person kayak, and a mooring for larger boats. Lake M is well known for its many species of trophy fish including; land locked salmon, lake trout, bass, perch and northern pike. Bring your passport and explore Quebec either, by boat, car, bike or hike. The town of Magog at the top of the lake offers many opportunities for fine dining and shopping. A 2015 summer guest wrote: "We spent a lot of time crossing the border and biking in Quebec. It was incredible. I have been lucky to bike in many places and the rides we did to Ayers Cliff, Way's Mills, Sherbrooke, etc. were among the best I have ever done. Of course, every ride ended with a roundtrip down to Eagle Point and the flat, beautiful run home on the bike path. We ate at Mechant Steak in Magog one night and I would highly recommend it. They open all of the windows and the breeze blows right through. The food was very good. We also discovered a Boulangerie/Patisserie just over the border in Stanstead on Rte. 143/Rue Dufferin called Les Vraies Richesses (The Real Wealth). Tasty pastries and sandwiches. It was a fun place to stop as we were in the final miles of our long rides. Closer to Derby, we ate at Lagos and Pie & Pasta Company, both of which you know of and both of which we enjoyed. At the house, we were fortunate to get a long look at a Bald Eagle that flew in one day and perched on a branch of tree right nearby for almost two hours." Our side of the lake is shallow out to 100 feet and perfect for safe swimming for the kids. An indoor skating rink and water park at Jay Peak offer pricey but fun things on a rainy day. Newport is a city on the move. High end restaurants and fine dining is to be found downtown along with funky sandwich shops, chain fast food and family friendly establishments. Nearby ski resorts at Burke and Jay Peak offer year round events along with golf and the impressive waterpark at Jay. Newport GC is a short drive away. Endless possibilities exist to explore miles of rivers by kayak right from your front door. Shopping opportunities continue to expand with the opening of the new Super Walmart (for better or worse), Dunkin' Donuts, Shaws, Wendys, Price Chopper, Rite Aid and CVS. Home is very well maintained and features four bedrooms sleeping 8 comfortably with one and one half baths. The large porch overlooks the lake for warm summer evenings. Rental is an ideal getaway from the world. Xfinity cable TV with HBO and fast (50Mbps) wireless internet provided. However, this house is best enjoyed by disconnecting. Board games, Alexa, Bose Bluetooth speaker and paperbacks provided. Linen, 4 towels, dishes, pot and pans, utensils, iron/board, microwave, electric cook stove, oven, electric heat, fridge, coffee maker. First aid kit. High end washer and dryer in laundry room. Weber barbeque with propane provided. Open fire pit on the sea wall with firewood provided. 3G cell service and plenty of internet access downtown. Available for late spring, summer and fall weeks. Reduced prices for longer stays and the shoulder seasons. Refundable deposit by check only. Balance due 60 days before occupancy. No damage deposit but credit card required. No smoking and sorry no pets. Je parle un petit peu Francais. Merci bien! Just google Newport-Beebe bike trail for this 5 star review and others • This (along with two other trails over the border) make for a great (and relatively easy) 1/2 day trip. Here is a description of the 30-mile ride I took this week - PASSPORT REQUIRED: A 2018 guest wrote: Pick up the packed gravel trail right outside the front door heading north by Lake Mephremagog. Good conditions for Hybrid and trail bike tires. At the end of the trail, take a right onto the paved road (North Derby Rd.) Approx. 2 miles to the end, then left. Pass through Canadian customs. Take a quick, few-hundred feet detour, east from the Customs house for a photo of Canusa St. dividing the US/Canada. Then back to the customs station and a right following Rt. 247 north for about 3/4 mile, past a large 'Rediker' stone and a couple of banks, until you see the Tomifobia Nature Trail heading off to the right. The first mile of this 19-km trail isn't too scenic but it gets better very quickly. I went about 5 miles down the trail, then turned around and came back to the marked road barrier at 'Ch. de Stanstead' (Stanstead Rd.?). There's a pond to your right at this crossing. Left /southeast on Ch. de Stanstead for about 2 miles to its end, then left (east) on Rue Maple. (This Stanstead/Maple roads part is seriously uphill for a total of about 2.5 miles). At the end of Rue Maple, you're in downtown Stanstead. Take a right (south) onto Rt. 143/Rue Dufferin heading back towards the US border. Just before the border, make a left on Boulevard Notre Dame, then a quick right on Baxter. A couple of blocks take you to the Haskell Library and Opera house, straddling the border. Park the bike on the Canadian side and walk around to the front door of the library which is on the US side. Make sure to take a tour for 5 bucks to see the opera house and the stripes on the floors that mark the border running through the building. From the library, go back north on Rue Church, 1/4 mile to Blvd. Notre Dame (Rt. 247) and take a left (west). Cross Rt. 143 (large stone fountain will be on your left). After a quick down-hill (1/4 mile), bear to the right on Rue Passenger, following black on white signs for 'Piste Cyclable de Stanstead' bike trail . It's a little hard to find, so best to look at a Google Map before leaving the library to get familiar. Basically it's up a short hill on Rue Passenger than downhill left. You'll see the trail to the right at a power substation. It's less than 5 minutes from Library to this trail by bike. Follow this bike trail about 2 miles until it crosses Rt. 247, about a 1/4 mile from the border station you where you entered Canada. Go left (south) on Rt. 247, through US customs, then a quick right at the post office to follow your way back on N. Derby Rd. to the Newport Trail and the start of the ride. The Tomifobia and Newport trails are both loaded with beautiful sites. The final trail (Piste Cyclable Stanstead) is more functional than beautiful, but was in excellent condition (hard-packed dirt) and kept me off the main road (Rt. 247) just to the south of the trail. A Spring 2019 guest wrote: What can I say? Another fantastic week at "Oars on Orrwood". Seven days of glorious weather, seven great bike rides locally and in Southern Quebec, wildlife sightings galore right off the back porch (bald eagle, mink, woodchuck, etc.), and that view! Everything was perfect. Even the water was warm enough to go swimming. Can't wait until August. Enjoy!
