La Petite Gensac - La Cathedrale Apartment. Sleeps 6
This impressive apartment, on the first floor, comprises two bedrooms, kitchen, sitting room, bathroom and loo. Both bedrooms are equally large and airy with east facing windows overlooking the gardens. Bedroom one has an extra large double bed and an en suite WC and basin. The other has two small double beds. Both have original marble fireplaces beneath mirrored stucco panels. French furnishings with armoires and Egyptian cotton bed linen all go toward creating an atmosphere of comfort and restrained elegance. The spacious sitting room and the kitchen are furnished comfortably for six people. Opening off the wide central corridor, the 30 square metre, high ceiling sitting room is tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished with double aspect windows giving a fine view of the Cathedral over red rooftops. The seating for six and the television make this room a perfect place to relax with a glass of local wine or Armagnac after a day of sight seeing. The three apartments are within the grand house of Hôtel de Gensac. Built around 1735 this 'hôtel particulier' (private mansion) is one of the historic and architecturally important houses of the town. During the Hundred Years' War, King Edward III installed his son as the administrator of this region of France. Known later by the sobriquet 'The Black Prince', the ruins of his palace chapel still remain as part of the mansion's fabric, helping to warrant its inclusion on one of the town's historic-sites walks. The three apartments are very different. Cathedrale (130m2) on the first floor is very spacious with all its rooms - sitting area, kitchen/diner, bathroom and two bedrooms - all high ceilinged, light, airy and centrally heated. The Studio (42m2) on the ground floor, is more modest but still has a separate bathroom and a bedroom leading off the main living area. This room has a three seater settee, a well-equipped kitchen area and pine table to seat four. The bedroom is well furnished with two single beds, bedside tables with lamps, dressing table and a wardrobe The tiled bathroom has a wc, double basins, a shower and heated towel rail. The Grenier (50m2) has its own seperate entrance off the communal patio. A spacious living area with seperate kitchen leads to the bedroom with two single beds and en suite bathroom. Leave the apartments by their secure private gate and you are at once in the typically Gascon town of Condom - rich in history, ancient buildings, museums and Roman artifacts. It is dominated by the magnificent cathedral of Saint-Pierre and bisected by the River Baîse, still with the quays once used to load barges with Armagnac brandy en route to Bordeaux. Restaurants and cafes abound to suit all tastes and pockets. Good shops and a twice-weekly market are on the door step for all self-catering needs. Just outside the town lies the beautiful countryside of The Gers - the very heart of Gascony. No suburbs, no industry, just gently rolling farmland and woodland interspersed with Bastide villages, fortified towns, ancient religious buildings, Chateaux and Gallo-Roman sites. They are all there to be savoured and enjoyed by those with an interest in history and a love and appreciation of countryside, culture, architecture, good eating and above all, a joie de vivre! Guests staying in the apartments of La Petite Gensac are welcome to use our 12 x 6 meter swimming pool between 10am and 6pm (1000 - 1800 hrs) In order to retain some privacy for the owners, guests are requested to keep to the designated access path and pool surround.
