The Hilltop cabin is about as charming as you can imagine We are 23 minutes to Asheville and 7 minutes to the quaint river town of Marshall. Folks love our place for the real homemade charm of the cabin, mountain views and garden setting. It is perfect for couples or a single traveler seeking minimalist simplicity. Doggies welcome too! Un-plug from the complexities of modern life while enjoying proximity to major sights, a galaxy of stars overnight and a sunrise view of dew on the gardens. “Rustic elegance”. Our cozy 2 floor cabin is on top of our property surrounded by 4 small garden patches interspersed with fruit shrubs and trees. We are raising a dairy calf in 2024 and sometimes put her up there two graze between guest On the first floor is the kitchen, small dining area and porch. Upstairs is a full-size bed and reading nook with mtn views. The kitchen is stocked with cookware, an electric burner, spices, oil, and a water heater (for coffee or tea), small fridge, and drinking water. The water system is rustic, but it works well. Fill up your own water from the spigot nearby. The cabin has a pit latrine (dry toilet) and no real shower but many folks like to use the garden hose in hot weather. We put an AC window unit summer 2024 but if you wish to cool with windows that fine too. Wi-fi is intentional weak but depending on your device can be gotten with persistence from deck or window, and parking area In cold weather, there is a space heater and a wood cookstove, the cabin is tight and heats easily in winter. There's a garden fence that doubles as a pet enclosure (Yes, your doggies are welcome!) a fire ring for enjoying the nighttime out-of-doors and a few interesting walks and steep trails around the neighborhood that we have helped developed. People have booked our cabin for romantic getaways, for personal writing, reading and music retreats but mainly for it's awesome proximity to hiking and culture. Many folks come to get a feel for staying in a tiny home and for the botanical appeal of our hillside gardens. Put 215 Catawba Drive MARSHALL, NC 28753 into maps and find your way here. Expect half a mile of slow going gravel roads over to the property. From Asheville, Interstate 26 West to exit 19A "Hot Springs/Marshall". Drive approximately 7 miles to Ivy River Road. Follow that road to its end, then take a left at the river. First real road on the left after about 1.0 mile is Panhandle (wooden sign) Drive 0.5 mile then RIGHT at South Panhandle, then a RIGHT on Catawba Drive. Stay RIGHT at Martha Jordan Drive and keep straight for less than 1/4 mile til the red letters on white sign 'HILLTOP CABIN'. Goose the accelerator up the short drive to the parking. There you will park facing an old shed we used to milk cows in, walk between that and the wood&trash shed up the stone steps. Then hang a right at the big house and up the log steps. There is a coded box to fetch the key Let us know if you plan to arrive after dark so we can put a light on for you. We are not always available to help because we have young children but few people find their cabin without problems:-) We live with our three girls a close walk down the hill in the big house. We are happy to meet and greet if we're able to. The neighborhood is full of friendly people and we have visitors now and again. The cabin stands alone but is definitely part of a shared environment, because we do gardening up around the cabin and because of the relative proximity of other houses. This gives you the choice of a social environment, but also the solitude of a hilltop hideaway with a fenced enclosure. During the late Spring, Summer and early Fall, we are are cultivating veggies, flowers and fruits up around the Cabin, but only during the day between 10am-sundown. We make a point to give guests total privacy in the morning and evening. The neighborhood is rich with interesting people and projects, including the 'Prama Institute and Wellness Center'. Guests are welcome to walk on the roads grassy fields and find some of the trails The driveway is a little steep up to the parking area, but not bad in comparison to many roads nearby (4x4 is fine, but not necessary). The town of Marshall, is about 3.5 miles (5.8km) away and has many amenities for visitors (grocery, bank, gas station, bars and restaurants). The cabin in located a short walk up a hill on a wide grassy trail, so be prepared in all weather conditions with good shoes. There are sometimes tiny ants in the cabin though we put out an effective bait frequently. Hornets and wasps also make their way in periodically. VERIZON is best for mobile phone service, so if you do not use Verizon, plan to study the directions carefully, because you may not be able to call us. Follow signs for RAVEN RIDGE, keeping RIGHT at Martha Jordan Drive, we're a 1/4 miles past it.
